Jira Integration

Connect Jira to Teaminal

To connect Jira to Teaminal, visit the integrations page and click on the “Add Jira Integration” button.

After you connect, Teaminal will map Jira users to Teaminal users based on email address. If you have users in Jira that aren’t in Teaminal, they won’t be connected.

Standups with Jira

With Jira connected, when you post a status update to Teaminal, your recently closed tasks will be shown alongside the update. You can click on the task name to open it in Jira.

Planning Poker with Jira

For planning pokers, you can manually create a planning poker task by searching for the ticket you’d like to size, or you can have Teaminal automatically create a planning pokers when tickets are created.

Once you’ve created a planning poker, you can vote for how many story points you think the ticket is worth or comment on the poker to discuss the ticket. When you’re ready to update the ticket in Jira, you can click the “Set Jira to X” button to set the ticket’s story points. Comments from Teaminal will be copied into Jira.

Backlog Refinement with Jira

For backlog refinement, you can manually create a refinement task by searching for the ticket you’d like to refine, or you can have Teaminal automatically grab the oldest unrefined tickets in your project on a regular cadence.

Once you’ve created a refinement, you can vote on it (by default, “Ready”, “Not ready”, “Blocked”, or “Close”) or comment on the refinement to discuss the ticket.

If you’ve set up refinements to update a field in Jira, similar to planning pokers, you can click the “Set Jira to X” button to set the ticket’s story points. Comments from Teaminal will be copied into Jira.

If you haven’t set up refinements to update a field in Jira, you can click the “Close” button to close the refinement in Teaminal (this will not update the ticket’s state).

Retros with Jira

Similar to status updates, when a team retro is created, the team’s recently closed tasks will be shown alongside the retro. You can click on the task name to open it in Jira.

Teaminal Jira Settings

You can customize your settings on a team-by-team basis. To do that, visit the Manage Teams page and then click into the settings page for a team.

Troubleshooting

Resetting your connection

If your Jira connection isn’t working properly, try removing and adding the connection back again. None of your existing data will be affected.

To do that, visit the Integrations page and click on the “Remove Jira Integration” button. When the page reloads, click on the “Add Jira Integration” button.

Backlog Refinement not working

If you’re using the backlog refinement feature and it’s not working, make sure you’ve set up the integration to update a field in Jira.

Can’t push story points to Jira

If you’re getting an error trying to set story points on a Jira issue, double-check in Jira that your story points field is either on your “Default Screen” or “Edit Screen” in Jira, otherwise the API won’t let Teaminal update it. You should be able to see those screens and add the field to them here: https://<your-company>.atlassian.net/jira/settings/issues/screens
